Yucinto (Yul)'s Story

I wanted to go to Eastern ever since I was 9 or 10 years old. My mother graduated from Eastern. My Father taught Health/PE and was the basketball coach at Eastern (Mr. Cannon). I still remember now as if it was yesterday all of the Interhigh basketball and football games I went to. Eastern playing in large arenas in front of thousands of screaming fans and the cheerleaders, ohhh, the cheerleaders! I had not seen anything like it! When I graduated from junior high in Maryland (Pullen Jr), I told my parents I wanted to go to Eastern (My grandmother lived in Langston Terrace and I could live with her and help around the house). They said no (period). I went to Crossland High and played on the basketball team my first year. I asked again the next year and again they said no. My senior year they gave in and, finally, I got to go to the school I had dreamed about going to all along. By now, my basketball skills were much improved. I was, also, confident in my abilites on the court because of playing with and against the best players in the metro area at various basketball camps and summer leagues. My senior year was everything I dreamed about and more. Everyone, teammates and stu...Expand for more
dents, accepted me as a full fledged Eastern Rambler from the start. I had a great year academically and otherwise. It was topped off with making the 1982 Interhigh All-Star game. I went to Johnson C Smith University for 1 year and transfered to Morgan State University the next year. Things did not work out as planned at Morgan. I came home and worked a couple of computer operator jobs for four years. In 1989, I started working at Safeway part time as a cashier. Now, 20 years later, I'm still with Safeway. I have been an assistant manager for the last 7 years. I'm married (my wife graduated from Eastern) and have 3 children (Yul, Jr 21, Jaylen 8, and Jamiya 3) I still play basketball from time to time but video games have taken over the number spot on my hobby list. As a manager at Safeway and a father of three, I don't have much time to play video games like I use to, but I still try to play at least once a week with my friends. I play Madden, NBA 2K, Tiger Woods and Call of Duty mostly. Lastly to all my fellow Eastern High classmates, thanks for the continued love, respect and support! and I will see or talk to all of you soon. God Bless You All!! RAMBLER 4 LIFE....
